About Mary Ludington

Mary Ludington

My work explores the emotional and symbolic presence of animals through the lens of black and white film and digital color photography.

Animals, for me, are not metaphors for human experience. They are their own presence, distinct and sovereign. My photographs seek to hold space for that otherness.  I am drawn to the subtle interiority of non-human life, to the soul-image that animals carry without effort or narrative.

These photographs are not meant to explain but to invite contemplation. They are offerings—quiet frames through which to glimpse the mystery of beings we do not fully know but may still feel deeply.

Book: The Nature of Dogs, Simon & Schuster.  Out-of-print, but many used copies available online.
